Day 348 of the 365 Days of Blogging

FURTHER OBSERVATIONS

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Perspective is reminding yourself it's only the end of the year not the friggin' end of the world. That would be perspective, but the general media would have it otherwise. Let's look at a few things that have dominated the news cycles lately.

A loud mouthed bigot, who daily is shown in video clip after video  clip to be just that, is bumped off his reality show. The right wing media goes bozo over him being persecuted for exercising his First Amendment rights. Sorry to say, though the Constitution does guarantee his freedom of speech, within clearly defined boundaries, it doesn't cover his right to be employed. If A&E saw him as what he was, a landmine waiting to cause serious damage to the network, they had every right to can his ass. Period. His family wants to follow him out the door? Let's all stand here and wave good-bye. Television is stupid enough without another fabulously wealthy redneck making it sound even more vulgar and low brow.

How about all the press being given to the disappearance of real books and brick and mortar bookstores to sell them? Well, as in any highly competitive endeavor, the "everything" stores have found that there will probably be a great merging of entities until there are only a few of them left and too bad for the consumer. At least that's what the financial rags in their myopic world are heralding. If you actually pay attention to the facts and figures, there's a resurgence of the mom and pop independent bookstore. Why? Well, a large part of it is due to the on-line distributors being swamped in a torrent of really bad work by untalented, unskilled, undeserving writers who put the possibility of profit ahead of craft. The real world distributors are enjoying a rise because they offer a stock chosen with discernment and care. Quality over quantity.

The near shutdown of the government resulted in a $28 billion loss to the U.S. economy and caused severe damage to the conservative image and agenda. A withdrawal on their part got things moving but did nothing to restore confidence in the far right, the Tea Party, or any of the wild-eyed oracles of doom who make a living off of that particular type of McCarthyite regime. So what makes Paul Ryan, the Senator who bases his philosophy on a fictional bunch of heroes in the writings of a rabid anti-left wing author, think doing it all again is a good idea? Go figure. Looks kind of like the comic definition of insanity to me. You know, doing the same wrong headed thing, over and over, and expecting a different result. I don't think so.

My point in all this is simple. Even though we live in a world where information flies at light speed, it's a lot more fun to sit back and watch things play out. Fame and victory are always fleeting, one side has to be the winner, and another has to lose. It's far more fun to watch the human comedy from a distance.
